As a high school student, I get to see the many waves of fashion trends that take over the general population from time to time, and recently I have noticed a new one, or rather, an old one taking hold. Vintage clothing, is clothing that was previously outdated that has returned to the forefront of fashion. The concept itself isn't new, but swerves in and out of fashion like a crazed car, shifting from "cool" to "uncool" and back again faster than you can visit a thrift shop. But recently, more than just thrift stores have taken to selling this outdated clothing for example, Urban Outfitters. Some have looked into where exactly Urban Outfitters gets its clothing and have discovered that they usually come from yard sales and are marked up 50% or more on some occasions just because it now contains the Urban Outfitters brand name. I find it ridiculous that the name of a brand printed on a tag can cause it to become so expensive.
Of course, the employees of Urban Outfitters have worked hard to scout out particular clothing from yard sales that are still wearable now, but their work does not make a 5 dollar yard sale t-shirt into a 50 dollar shirt. To be fair, the clothing items that Urban Outfitters sells under the vintage tag are also usually former brand name items, but still, a 20 year old shirt with a Lacoste logo on it and a 20 year old shirt without a logo should be worth the same price. To avoid wasting money on a brand name, its probably better to just go to a thrift shop yourself. Of course, there will be some musty smells and some questionable stains, but isn't it better to find a good deal than pay double the price purely because someone else found it first?

Never heard that about Urban and the yardsales. I shop there and agree that there clothes are overpriced, but i still like them and other vintage clothes. I like to dress nice and have nice clothes, some are brand name and others arent. But there are many brand name products which are better quality even though they are expensive, like sperry topsider, but converse vans are 45 -65 dollars a pair and have no arch support and wearout quickly.
ReplyDeleteI think Urban Outfitters is such a ripoff. Yes, they do have great styles and I am guilty of owning quite a few dresses/shoes from them, but the fact is that their clothes are terrible quality and won't last for more than a few wears. I bought a dress there once that ripped the MOMENT I got home! So I totally think that selling yard sale clothing for a large amount of money is just plain ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI heard about this on the news and I agree with Katey that Urban Outfitters is a HUGE ripoff. People spend insane amounts of money to achieve the "I'm not trying"/boho look. Stores like Forever 21 have some of the same style of clothes and is a lot more affordable. Personally, I would rather spend money on nice things that will last rather than ill-quality items.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, Ria! Some companies really seem to over-do their pricings for some items, and it is especially ridiculous when stores selling already-used items set prices like you mentioned. I think the item is of more value when it is unique to that store and an ordinary item of theirs, which can make it somewhat reasonable to make certain prices, but when it is an old and used item, I do not understand why people even bother to buy the over-priced item!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree, but not necessarily with the vintage aspect of your argument. The point that you brought up about brand name clothes costing more is a very valid point. If I can get the same clothes at Walmart or Target as I can at Urban Outfitters or H&M but for significantly less, why wouldn't I just buy the cheaper item? No one except for me would know where it came from, and it would look just like name brand clothes. Everything these days are so overpriced because of a specific name that is affiliated with it, and I am tired of overpaying.
